General requirements for lessons
Punctual attendance is required at every lesson. Notify the instructor in advance if you will be absent. Lessons missed without a reasonable explanation will not be made up and will cause your grade to be lowered. Lessons missed by the instructor will be rescheduled.
The absolute minimum equipment requirement for lessons is: trumpet in Bb and mouthpiece, straight mute, cup mute, Harmon mute, plunger, and a metronome. Consult with your teacher regarding future equipment purchases.
You can easily order printed music from Robert King Music via the web. Also highly recommended is Sheet Music Service of Portland at 800-452-1133. All students should order free catalogs from The Brasswind at 800-348-5003 and Giardinelli Music at 800-288-2334.
The applied trumpet performance requirement is intended to increase your public performance experience. Therefore, a public performance will not excuse you from a jury. Regarding instrumentation: all solos that are accompanied will be performed with accompaniment. No performances with tape recordings of accompaniments will be permitted. You may, however, use the Vivace Accompaniment System.
Additional requirements and materials are listed by year. The instructors reserve the right to alter any requirement with reasonable notice.
All students taking applied trumpet will participate in trumpet seminar which will normally meet Fridays at 12:00 noon in Bliss Recital Hall. A musical terms test will be given every semester. The terms on this test will be taken from works discussed in seminar. The exact date of this test will be announced.
Recital hearings and recitals must occur in consecutive semesters within the same academic year or during the same quarter. Recital hearings and recitals will be completed within the prescribed semesters. Those who fail to meet these deadlines will repeat the respective level of applied study. Under no circumstances should you schedule your recital to conflict with any Dana event, the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra or the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra. You must clear your proposed performance date with Dr. Krummel.
