Photography http://ysuphoto.blogspot.com Students in the Photography Program at YSU study photographic processes in both the traditional and the electronic workspaces within the context of a department of art. Our goal is for students to move seamlessly between traditional and emerging technologies while exploring historic and contemporary issues within lens-based media. Our 50/50 premise involves equal attention to the science and craft of photography and the realization of expressive, individualized content through critical thinking and conceptual development. This technical framework provides the student with the necessary means to make competent images within the contexts of both photographic history and the contemporary world of art. Students explore the historical, aesthetic, and theoretical developments of photography in the History of Still Photography and Issues and Practices courses, both of which are taught by photo faculty. Additionally, photo faculty present a variety of concepts and applications related to lens-based media through Special Topics courses that are open to all studio majors. Internships and community opportunities are available to photography majors wishing to expand their coursework. As with all BFA Studio Art majors, students begin the photographic course sequence only after they pass the Freshman Foundation Portfolio Review and begin upper-level course work after their Junior Portfolio Review in Photography. There are outstanding scholarship opportunities for students studying photography at YSU. Beyond Department of Art scholarships and Student Show Awards, competitive scholarships are available to photo majors through the Robert Yalch Memorial Scholarship Fund. Each spring semester sophomore, junior and senior photo majors are awarded annual scholarships based on application materials and merit. Additionally, a small group of students receive competitive travel awards to attend the Society for Photographic Education national conference that is held in a different city every March during spring break. Graduating seniors are eligible for Robert Yalch Legacy Awards that add selected equipment to the photography facilities in the names of BFA photography students.
