Bachelor of Science in Education

Art education and Ohio State Licensure to teach can be achieved in two ways at YSU. Students can enroll in pre-Art Education in the Art Department as freshmen. As juniors, they will be automatically transferred into the School of Education and will receive a B.S. in Ed. Degree when they graduate. This degree includes the education, art education, studio art and art history classes.

The other means to an art education degree is by enrolling in the Department of Art’s BFA in Studio Art major with a concentration in General Fine Arts. This is the “professional” art degree and normally would not require a minor because of the number of semester hours required in the major, however students who elect this route will have a minor by virtue of the education classes they take for licensure. The degree offers the art student more opportunities to take additional studio art classes, particularly at the higher levels, however it would also take more time to complete.

An effort has been made in either curriculum to provide potential teachers at every level with exposure to media and techniques in many areas. In addition to the studio classes, art education students must take courses in art history and theory.

Art education students are not allowed to begin the breadth studio course sequence until they have passed the Freshman Foundation Portfolio Review. Finally, art education students take education classes both within the art department and at the Beeghley College of Education. Student teaching, normally done at the end of the academic studies, involves experiences at several different levels however, students are licensed for pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade in art education.

Before students are allowed to student teach there are some additional requirements that must be met. Students must have a 2.67 grade point average. They must also pass both parts of a national test, the Praxis exam, required of all Ohio teachers.

Job opportunities in art education are relatively good in this region and excellent in growth areas of the country such as the Southeast and West.
